So what do I install, and when?
I've hung drywall since 2017. Since 2022, I've also installed Trusscore wall and ceiling panels on maybe thirty jobs—garages, basements, a bar kitchen, a warehouse office. I've personally made—and documented—six significant mistakes in that time, totaling roughly $2,300 in wasted budget and a decent amount of humility. The fair comparison, then, is: drywall, taped, mudded, and painted versus Trusscore, screwed, trimmed, and finished. Comparing a bare sheet of drywall to a finished PVC panel is apples to oranges. Compare the finished systems, and the conversation changes.
Water and moisture: Trusscore wins, and I learned that the expensive way
I didn't always believe the moisture claims. In my first year (2017), I did a condo laundry room in green board—standard 'moisture-resistant drywall'—because that felt like enough. The contractor across the hall warned me it wouldn't survive the commercial washers. I didn't listen.

We finished with drywall in the dining area (flat, seamless look) and Trusscore behind the bar and in the kitchen. The client paid about the same per square foot for both zones. My takeaway: the panel system isn't automatically the premium option once you price the whole drywall crew. Run your own numbers—labor rates vary, and if you've got in-house hands at $25 an hour, the math tilts the other direction.
Also, since people ask: neither product is your insulation. If the wall needs R-value, put it in the cavity. The board or panel is just the finish.
Durability: walls that survive real life
People look at a smooth white PVC board and think 'plastic'—cheap, brittle, gonna feel like a shower stall. The reality: it doesn't chip, doesn't crumble, and you can wipe it with just about anything. Painted drywall scuffs, dents, and needs patching. Trusscore shrugs off the daily stuff.
One reverse-validation moment: I was sure a pallet jack would gouge a panel in a warehouse storage room. It left a scuff. A scuff. Drywall would've had a hole the size of a fist. That said, I won't pretend panels are indestructible—sharp steel scratches PVC, and it's not the answer for constant forklift abuse. But for day-to-day bumps, carts, and rental turnovers, the panel wins by a mile.
One more note for the sustainability-minded: if a supplier calls PVC panels 'recyclable,' ask where the nearest accepting facility is. Per the FTC Green Guides (16 CFR Part 260), environmental claims like 'recyclable' need to be substantiated—so verify the claim in your region before it goes into your marketing or LEED paperwork.
Fire and sound: where drywall wins, and why that's okay
Here's the dimension that surprises everyone who's only read the glossy pages: drywall is still the right call for fire-rated and sound-rated assemblies.
In most jurisdictions following the International Building Code (IBC), rated assemblies are built with specific, tested components. Type X gypsum board is a standard part of many 1-hour-rated wall assemblies. A thermoplastic PVC panel is not a tested substitute in that configuration.
If you're putting panels in a mechanical room, stairwell, or garage separation, check local code before you buy. I've seen a builder panic after an inspector flagged this exact issue—that's a rework you don't want.
Sound is similar. Soundproofing is mostly mass, and drywall brings a lot of it. The standard trick for a home theater is two layers of 5/8-inch drywall. A lightweight PVC panel lacks that mass, so if a separating wall needs real STC performance, put the panels elsewhere.
Does that make Trusscore bad? No—it means 'better' has boundaries. I use Trusscore in laundries, garages, basements, bathrooms, and bar backs. I use drywall in theaters, fire-rated separations, and any wall that needs to visually disappear.
The look: seamless versus panelized
We should talk about looks, because customers ask. Drywall gives you a continuous flat wall that disappears under paint. Trusscore has visible seams and a purpose-built, panelized look. No matter how good the trim is, you'll know it's not a painted drywall wall.
For a high-end dining room or a gallery wall, drywall is still the honest answer. For a workshop, garage, or commercial back-of-house, the panelized look reads as intentional—and people actually like not seeing smudged drywall behind the bar.
So what do I install, and when?
This is the whole comparison in the only form that's useful for a decision:
- Pick Trusscore when: water or humidity is a possibility, the wall will get washed or banged, speed matters, or you're tired of paint touch-ups. My list: garages, basements, laundry rooms, bathroom walls and ceilings, commercial kitchens, and bar areas.
- Pick drywall when: a fire rating is required, sound isolation is the goal, or the design calls for one long uninterrupted surface. My list: living spaces, media rooms, rated walls, anything with a strict commercial code review.
The mistake I kept repeating was treating this like a 'which product is better' fight. It's a 'which room is this?' question. Now it's literally the first item on our team's checklist—before anyone lifts a panel or a sheet of rock, we verify the room type, the moisture plan, and the local code. Since we started doing that in Q1 2024, we've caught a dozen would-be redo situations and saved an estimated $8,000 in avoided rework.
So go ahead: argue the specs all you want. Then answer the room question, and the right material pretty much picks itself.
