Why I Stopped Comparing Trusscore to Drywall by Price Per Square Foot
When I first started quoting Trusscore wall panels for commercial jobs, I made the same mistake almost every contractor makes: I compared the material cost per square foot to drywall and called it a day.
Three months and one very expensive redo later, I learned that comparison is almost useless. Here's why.
The Price Per Square Foot Trap
I used to think Trusscore was expensive. At roughly $3.50–$5.00 per square foot for the panels alone (depending on finish and quantity), it's pricier than basic drywall at $1.50–$2.00 per square foot. That math made me hesitate on recommending it.
But here's what I missed: drywall's cheap sticker price hides every single downstream cost.
What the Sticker Price Doesn't Show
On a 12,000 sq ft warehouse ceiling job in Q1 2024, I bid drywall at $2.80/sq ft installed. Seemed like a win. Then the real costs hit:
- Mudding and taping: $0.80/sq ft extra
- Priming and painting: $0.70/sq ft extra
- Scaffolding rental for ceiling work: $2,400 total
- Rework from drywall cracks after HVAC install: $3,100 and a 1-week delay
That "cheap" drywall job ended up at $4.30/sq ft all-in, with a headache I still remember.
Meanwhile, a parallel Trusscore ceiling install on the same building — same sq footage — came in at $3.90/sq ft installed. No mud, no paint, no crack repairs. One crew, 4 days less time.
That's when I realized: comparing raw material cost per square foot without factoring install time, finishing, and rework is like comparing car prices without accounting for fuel and maintenance.
The Labor Math That Changed My Mind
I'm a numbers guy. So I started tracking actual install hours across 7 projects using Trusscore vs. drywall (2024 data, my own jobs):
- Drywall (including finishing): 2.8–3.5 hours per 100 sq ft
- Trusscore: 0.9–1.3 hours per 100 sq ft
At $65/hour labor (my crew rate), that's a savings of $100–$150 per 100 sq ft on labor alone. On a 10,000 sq ft job, that's $10,000–$15,000 in your pocket.
And that's before counting the fact that Trusscore is a 1-trade install: no mudders, no painters, no drywall finishers. One crew. Done.
The "It's Just Drywall" Oversimplification
It's tempting to think of wall and ceiling panels as a commodity: just buy the cheapest material and move on. But that ignores what actually happens on site:
- Drywall needs 2–3 trades (installers, finishers, painters). Trusscore needs 1.
- Drywall is heavy and fragile. Trusscore is lightweight and impact-resistant.
- Drywall absorbs moisture. Trusscore doesn't.
A client in a food processing facility learned this the hard way last year. They spec'd drywall for a washdown area. Within 6 months, they had mold issues and spent $8,500 on remediation and replacement. Trusscore would have cost more upfront but zero moisture issues long-term.
What About the "But It's Plastic" Objection?
I hear this a lot from builders who prefer traditional materials. And yeah, PVC isn't a premium look in a luxury home. But for garages, warehouses, basements, commercial kitchens, and high-moisture areas? The material choice is obvious.
Trusscore is moisture-resistant by design, not by coating. You can pressure wash it. It won't swell, rot, or delaminate. That durability has a real dollar value over the building's lifetime.
Plus, modern Trusscore panels don't look like cheap plastic. The matte finishes and slatwall options hide seams well. In a finished basement or retail space, visitors won't notice it's PVC unless you tell them.
When I Still Choose Drywall
To be fair, I don't think Trusscore is right for every job. Here's where I still spec drywall:
- Custom curved walls (drywall bends, PVC doesn't)
- Residential living rooms where perfect paint finish matters more than durability
- Budget-constrained projects where the client literally can't spend more upfront
But for commercial, industrial, and high-traffic areas? I've stopped doing the per-square-foot comparison. Because that comparison is missing the point.
The Bottom Line
If you're comparing Trusscore to drywall purely on material cost per square foot, you're making the same mistake I made in 2022. The real comparison is total installed cost + lifetime maintenance.
On 80% of the jobs I've done since Q2 2024, Trusscore came out ahead when you factor in labor, finishing, rework, and durability. Not always — but more often than I expected.
So here's my advice: run the full job cost, not just the material cost. You might be surprised what the spreadsheet tells you.
